I am a sociocultural anthropologist (Ph.D. Boston University) interested in the ethnographic studies of the interplay among religion, ethnicity, gender, development, urbanization, as well as aging and well-being. My research has taken me to the mountains of Southwest China and the water towns of Jiangnan. I enjoy teaching fieldwork methods, ethnographic China, as well as topics on borders and boundaries. My works include Religion and Charity: The Social Life of Goodness in Chinese Societies (co-authored with R. P. Weller et al., Cambridge University Press, 2017), and many essays that have appeared in Current Anthropology, Comparative Studies in Society and History, Journal of Contemporary Religion, Journal of Asian Studies, Modern China, etc.
